Mr. Mott honorably served in the United States Marine Corps before beginning a distinguished 25-year career with the Paterson Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Detective Lieutenant.

Extensive Experience in Major Investigations
In addition to his Internal Affairs leadership, Mr. Mott commanded Street Gang Intelligence and served as Executive Officer of Internal Affairs. He also supervised a Major Crimes Squad, leading complex investigations into violent crime and gang activity.

He worked closely with federal and state partners including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and served as a direct liaison with the FBI following the September 11 attacks.

For 12 years, he served on an Anti-Crime Task Force targeting violent offenders and street gangs, and he has been recognized as an expert witness in court on narcotics, weapons, gang activity, and internal affairs investigations.

Administrative charge stems from refusal to alter factual report following 2024 shots-fired incident

CECIL COUNTY, MD — February 28, 2026 — A publicly held trial board on February 27, 2026, as reported by the Cecil Whig, found Sheriff candidate Nick Jaskiewicz guilty of a single administrative charge: Failure to Obey a Lawful Order.

The case did not involve dishonesty, excessive force, criminal wrongdoing, or misconduct toward the public.

The sole sustained charge arose from Mr. Jaskiewicz’s refusal to alter or remove information from an official report following a March 2024 shots-fired incident in Cecil County.

According to testimony and records presented during the proceedings, Mr. Jaskiewicz was the primary trooper assigned to the patrol area and responded to reports from victims who stated they had been shot at. Witnesses at the scene confirmed that gunfire had occurred. Mr. Jaskiewicz established a perimeter and requested investigative resources consistent with responding to an armed incident.

What followed, according to Mr. Jaskiewicz, was not a failure of policing but a failure of leadership.

Supervisory decisions were made without direct communication with the trooper managing the scene. Investigative resources that had been requested were canceled, and troopers were ordered by supervisors to clear the scene. Days later, Mr. Jaskiewicz learned that additional investigative actions were taken the following day.

Mr. Jaskiewicz maintains that delaying investigative steps in a shots-fired incident could impact both evidence collection and the safety of the community.

When he documented the full sequence of events in his official report, he was ordered to remove information he believed to be factual and relevant to the incident. He refused to remove that information.

He was later instructed to rescan documents in a manner that would align with a supervisor’s preferred presentation of the case. He again refused.

During the dispute, Mr. Jaskiewicz wrote a note expressing frustration with the situation. He has acknowledged that the tone of that note was unprofessional.

“I have been clear about that,” Jaskiewicz said. “The note was written in frustration and it should have been handled differently.”

However, he says the larger issue extends beyond that moment.

The trial board’s scope focused narrowly on whether a directive had been disobeyed. The proceedings did not examine broader concerns Mr. Jaskiewicz says he had raised regarding internal leadership decisions, communication failures, or whether organizational culture discourages officers from raising legitimate concerns.

Mr. Jaskiewicz states that his decision ultimately came down to professional integrity.

“I chose integrity over convenience,” Jaskiewicz said. “I chose documentation over silence and accountability over simply complying.”

As a candidate for Sheriff, Jaskiewicz says the experience has reinforced his belief that Cecil County deserves leadership that encourages transparency and ethical decision-making within law enforcement.

“Officers should never feel that documenting the truth will lead to punishment,” he said. “Leadership is not about demanding silence. It’s about earning trust.”

Mr. Jaskiewicz says the administrative finding will not deter his campaign and that he will continue advocating for transparency, accountability, and strong leadership in the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office.

Veteran Maryland State Trooper Announces Campaign Focused on Leadership, Transparency, and Support for Deputies

Cecil County, MD — Nick Jaskiewicz has officially filed to run for Sheriff of Cecil County, bringing more than a decade of law enforcement experience in Maryland and over twenty years of public safety service to the race.

Jaskiewicz became a Maryland State Trooper in 2015 and currently serves as a Senior Trooper, working on the front lines of law enforcement and public safety. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation among colleagues as an officer who earns respect through professionalism, integrity, and leadership—not by seeking approval.

A resident of Cecil County for the past ten years, Jaskiewicz has spent much of that time serving the same communities he calls home.

His commitment to public service began long before his law enforcement career. At just 14 years old, Nick became a certified first responder. By 16, he had earned his National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification, serving in the volunteer fire service while continuing his education. He later advanced his training as a paramedic, gaining extensive experience responding to emergencies and caring for patients before ultimately pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Now, Nick says the time has come to bring that experience to the leadership of the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office.

“The citizens and deputies of Cecil County deserve leadership that understands the realities of the job,” Jaskiewicz said. “They deserve a sheriff who supports the men and women doing the work every day, provides opportunities for growth, and ensures the office operates with transparency and accountability.”

Nick says his campaign will focus on strengthening leadership within the Sheriff’s Office, improving communication with the public, and ensuring deputies have the resources, training, and support necessary to protect the community.

He believes that effective law enforcement leadership must be grounded in experience, honesty, and open communication with the public.

“We owe the citizens of Cecil County transparency,” Jaskiewicz said. “When you elect a sheriff, you are electing someone to provide leadership, knowledge, and honest communication to the public. My goal is to build an office that our deputies are proud to serve in and a community that has confidence in its leadership.”

Jaskiewicz says his campaign will focus on building stronger relationships between the Sheriff’s Office and the communities it serves while maintaining a clear commitment to public safety, accountability, and professional leadership.
